Help students become more independent readers, and reinforce the idea that reading must make sense. Internalizing good reading habits or strategies will help readers actively monitor their own comprehension and provide them with techniques to use whenever a segment of text fails to make sense. Students are directed to stop reading when they don't understand and to try figuring out where problems occur and how they can be solved. The Storylords video programs, computer components, and teacher's guides introduce strategies for improving reading comprehension—modeling why they make sense and when they might prove effective—and teach students how to apply these strategies when they read.
