Cultural Studies have traditionally been taught in terms of ethnicity and race. Many video series present programs that feature the cultural heritage of single ethnic group. However, with the exception of newly arrived immigrants, most people are affiliated with more than one single ethnic heritage.
This series depicts a group of target-age, culturally diverse students in a creative learning space from which they examine the many aspects of culture. Magazine-style video segments present real-life examples of concepts. Effective strategies for experiencing unfamiliar cultural phenomena, for battling stereotypes and prejudice, and for celebrating diversity are modeled. Rooted in Social Studies standards, this series branches out to include many other disciplines as well, including language arts, music, and visual arts.
NOTE: Program #2 Family Kaliedoscope illustrates the broad diversity of North American families by exploring various ways that people define their own idea of family. The program includes a brief segment about a boy adopted by two male cohabitating parents.
