My Name is York (Heroes Read) (VHS)

The opening interview segment is appropriate for discussions of reading as a necessity in every walk of life, reading as a source of individual enjoyment, and issues of minority rights. In Elizabeth Van Steenwyk's story, we meet the only African American member of the Lewis and Clark expedition, which set forth on May 22, 1804, to find a waterway to the west coast of the North American continent. Told from the perspective of York, Captain William Clark's slave and lifelong companion, the story traces the route of the expedition right along with the Corps of Discovery. But while the expedition's quest was scientific knowledge and a safe, navigable waterway for commerce, Van Steenwyk paints York's search as one for a glimpse of freedom. This episode would fit well in a Black History Month curriculum. (11:59)
