MADISON, WIS.Beyond Borders, a program from the Wisconsin Educational Communications Board’s (ECB) instructional television series, Cultural Horizons of Wisconsin, received top honors for children’s programming on November 23 from the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The first place award was for Outstanding Achievement for Children’s ProgrammingChildren’s or Teen Series.
Cultural Horizons of Wisconsin, a 10-part series for ages 9 to 12, explores the cultural heritage and diversity of Wisconsin, with a focus on the present day. Beyond Borders examines some of the connections people living in Wisconsin have with other people and places around the world. It also illustrates with real-life examples the ways in which children can empower themselves to make the world a better place to live.
In a world where conflict comes far too easily, this award recognizes a resource for helping Wisconsin’s young people aim to better understand people from different cultures, said ECB Executive Director Tom Fletemeyer.
Produced by the Wisconsin Educational Communications Board at Wisconsin Public Television¹s facilities at UWGreen Bay, Cultural Horizons of Wisconsin debuted on public television stations statewide in April 2002. The winning 15-minute episode, Beyond Borders, will be broadcast again at 1:00 p.m. on January 16, 2003. The entire series airs twice more during this school year: first on January 17 (4:40 to 6:00 a.m.) and January 18 (1:00 to 2:50 a.m.) and again on Mondays at 1:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m., from February 17 to April 23, 2003.
Cultural Horizons of Wisconsin is supported by an interactive CD-ROM and a companion Web site offering a companion teacher guide (www.ecb.org/culture).
The ECB, a state agency, produces television programming, Internet and multimedia resources, and print materials that support Wisconsin and national academic standards.
