Letter TV (I, II, and III)

K-2 Beginning Reading and Awareness

2000, 2002, 2003 Acquisition from Destiny Images, Scott Depot, West Virginia.

Letter TV is a collection of five-minute programs for emergent and beginning readers. Animated characters based on punctuation marks come together in a news-program format to introduce students to letter-sound associations, basic phonemic skills, and excitement about reading. The instructional design of the series incorporates key phonemic elements and models reading in context. Season One (26 episodes) focuses on alphabet recognition, letter-sound associations, and phonemic awareness. Season Two (13 episodes) is focused on consonant blends and digraphs, and Season Three (13 episodes) targets vowel combinations.

AIT worked as content consultants on all three seasons of the series, providing input into script creation on such topics as

  • Instructional design
  • Best practices in teaching phonics
  • Incorporation of media literacy topics
  • Recommendations for appeal to a diverse audience

AIT also provided post-production services including

  • digitizing the videos
  • close-captioning facilities
  • A product-specific Web site where educators can find additional teaching materials, designed by AIT:
    • teaching guides for each series that included:
      • Suggestions and background information on using TV to teach
      • A summary of each video
      • Previewing activities
      • Post-viewing activities that include both
        • Activities to extend the reading and language arts experience, and
        • cross-curricular activities for using the videos in math, the arts, science, social studies, and health classes.
    • Coloring pages
    • Interactive online games
    • standards correlations for all fifty states
